Set the Robot Speed
In this lesson, you will learn how to control how fast the robot moves using the setSpeed block. This video shows how to set the speed at the beginning of your code or use multiple setSpeed blocks to change the speed throughout the program. You can also use the timer to see how long the robot takes to move.  

 

 

1. Set the Robot's Speed

Just like a car, a robot can move fast or slow. You can use the setSpeed block to choose how fast the robot moves. This block has one input, which is how fast the robot goes, measured in inches per second.

You can use a setSpeed block at the beginning of your code to set the speed for everything that comes after it. You can also change the robot's speed during a program, like in Example 2. The robot will keep using the last speed you gave it until you change it with a new setSpeed block.

You can see how fast or slow the robot moves by using the timer on the screen. The timer is in the middle section, just below the trash can. You can watch the timer to see how long the robot takes to move.

 

2. Maximum Speed

If you are using a physical Linkbot robot with the blue wheels, do not make the speed too high. The highest speed for a physical Linkbot is about 6 inches per second, but it works better at 4 or 5 inches per second or slower. The virtual robot in the grid does not have a speed limit, but it is still a good idea to choose a speed that matches what you want the robot to do. If the speed is too fast, it can be hard to see what is happening.
